Native plants, landscaping, & restoration services for the Colorado Plateau & the Southwest
Flagstaff Native Plant & Seed is dedicated to providing genetically adapted native plant material and full-scale restoration services for the Colorado Plateau and the Southwest. Located in Flagstaff, we also sell native plants at our retail nursery and offer landscaping expertise for commercial and residential projects. From our farm and greenhouses, we wholesale plants from our ever-expanding inventory. We specialize in collecting site-specific seeds and cuttings for many types of restoration projects and growing plants from these propagates.
Check this page monthly for current gardening advice and updates on events at the nursery.
May Gardening Tips
Vegetables. Cool season garden starts of vegetables, greens, and herbs will begin arriving May 3. Warm season starts will begin arriving May 20. You can sow greens, onions, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, and parsley outdoors now.
Trees and Shrubs. The nursery is fully stocked with trees and shrubs. Large Gambel’s oak and native chokecherry clumps are available in limited quantities this year and will probably be sold out by June. Many of our shrubs have over-wintered in their pots fully exposed to the elements at our farm in Doney Park. You won’t find more hardened, acclimated shrubs than these! Avoid planting trees in windy areas until the end of June.
Perennials. Our perennial inventory will continue to expand over the month of May as new items become ready for sale. Native strawberries grown from locally collected cuttings are available. Most 1-gallon perennials are in their second year of growth and have much more root mass and woody bases. We prefer planting with 1-gallon during the dry windy months of spring. Smaller perennials in 4-inch pots perform better with the onset of the monsoon season.
Grasses. Grasses are the fabric of the earth. They are essential to healthy soils and erosion control. Plugs provide a low-water means of establishing grass areas up to 1,000 square feet. We recommend ordering plugs now for planting just prior to monsoon. It takes 6 to 8 weeks for us to grow a tray of grass plugs. Monsoon water will supplement the needs of the plugs, and their root systems will establish quickly. Plugs are ordered as 72- or 128-cell trays. Plant one plug per square foot.
Watering. May and June are often our driest months in Flagstaff. Continue to water the native plants you planted last year if conditions remain dry. Saturate trees and shrubs with a deep watering every 7–10 days until monsoon season. Our general rule of thumb is that natives are established after their second monsoon season
