Our Philosophy: Why Grow Native?

Flagstaff Native Plant & Seed is dedicated to:

  • Providing and using local genotype native plants. The use of species that are genetically adapted to the local climate, soils, pests, and pollinators reduces water consumption, eliminates the need for pesticides and fertilizers, and helps preserve these adapted attributes within the local gene pool.
  • Propagating plants locally. Local production greatly reduces the carbon footprint typical of common nursery stock produced in and shipped from warmer climates. Local production also provides consumers with hardened, acclimated plants.
  • Promoting, designing, and installing native plant landscapes. Native plant landscapes designed with an understanding of local soils, plant populations, wildlife, and climate variations are restorative and sustainable landscapes.

We believe the horticultural industry needs innovative change to provide solutions to environmental degradation. Ironically, this industry has been a major player in that degradation. It has promoted a plethora of toxins in the form of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers to support plant and landscape choices that require excessive water and reduce diversity. FNPS strives to be an innovative solution for a healthier northern Arizona as well as a regional leader in redefining the purpose of horticulture.
