News from Flagstaff Native Plant & SeedNative Plant Lecture seriesThese lectures are held at FNPS on Saturdays at 9 a.m.
Greening a green industryFNPS has designed a passive solar addition for our nursery office in an effort to reduce our energy consumption. Construction is scheduled for the winter of 2008–2009. We are also experimenting with different containers to find an alternative to plastic pots. Most of our pots are reused, and we ask customers to return them after they have planted. The separate plastic tags for thousands of individual plants have been discontinued. Bare-Root stock ExpansionBare-root plants are sold without a container or soil and are available every spring. Bare-root stock includes field-grown trees, shrubs, fruits, and vegetables of varying sizes that are dug in the fall and spring while dormant. They are sold single or in bundles of five or more. Bare-root stock provides an inexpensive means of planting a large number of small trees or shrubs and to rapidly establish fruit and vegetable crops. There is local source at present for genetically adapted, native bare-root stock. FNPS believes that the demand for such material will increase as our awareness of the need for environmental restoration increases. To make this local source of adapted plant material readily available, we are in the process of planting our local farm with seedlings. Bare-root ponderosa, pinon, chokecherry, locust, strawberries, raspberries, and asparagus plants are now available. our CSA Program is off to a great start ...The Flagstaff Garden Starts CSA is a collaborative effort between Mountain Meadow Farm and FNPS to provide high-quality, responsibly grown, vegetable, herb, and edible flower starts to the local community. We are already out of shares for 2008, but you can e-mail us if you’re interested in next year’s program.
