Planting Recommendations...
Doney Park
The Doney Park lists are designed for windy conditions. For sheltered areas, you can use the general Flagstaff lists.
When to plant: Plant all types and sizes of plants except grass plugs between late June and late September. Trees and shrubs do particularly well when planted in September. Do not plant or sow during the windy season of March through mid June. Sow grasses or plant grass plugs late June through mid-August.
Feeding and watering: Soil amendments are not generally required. Use temporary surface drip lines attached to a hose for watering large windbreak plantings.
Baderville
The Baderville area will support most Flagstaff perennials. The variable springs, early first frosts, and poor drainage limit shrub and tree selections.
When to plant: Limit planting to late June through August for all plants. Sow grass seed in mid June. Sow perennial seed in mid June or November.
Where / how to plant: Plant pines and junipers in 1-2 ft berms of well drained soil. Plant water loving, leafy plants on the east (leeward) side of windbreaks. The soils of Baderville tend to be depleted of nitrogen. Add small amounts of organic compost to backfill when planting.
